Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán, well known as “Canelo Alvarez”, was born in the city of Guadalajara in Mexico and was raised on his family’s farm where he learned how to farm and ride horseback. All of his 6 brothers are professional boxers and he began training when he saw his older brother’s professional debut. He quickly became a mexican amateur champion and had his first professional debut at the age of 15. Canelo quickly rose up the ranks in the welterweight and middleweight knocking out a large majority of his early opponents.
Canelo won his first world title against Matthew Hatton winning the light middleweight WBC title with a unanimous decision, all 3 judges scoring it 119-108. Canelo then defended his title five times which led to a fight with one of the greatest fighters, Floyd Mayweather Jr. He lost the fight to Mayweather but many contested that it was a draw or that he won the fight. Canelo failed a drug test leading up to this fight which many say tarnish his legacy but Canelo still has a lot of time to prove he can be one of the greatest boxers ever.
